The first foreign missionary in Manipur in 1894
Historical Background
The arrival of William Pettigrew, the first foreign missionary, in Manipur in 1894 marked a significant turning point in the region’s history. Pettigrew dedicated his life to evangelism and community development, laying the foundation for the growth of Baptist churches in Manipur. His efforts led to the establishment of the first Baptist church, the Phungyo (Ukhrul) Baptist Church, in February 1902, marking the beginning of organized Baptist efforts in the region. Over the next few years, additional churches were founded, leading to the formation of the Manipur Christian Association in 1916, which aimed to foster fellowship among the growing number of Baptist congregations. This association laid the groundwork for a more structured organization that could address the spiritual and social needs of the increasing Christian community.

In 1928, the association was restructured into the Manipur Baptist Convention (MBC) to address the rapid growth of Christianity across various tribes, dividing into three primary associations: North East, Sadar Hills, and North West. The MBC functioned as a Fellowship Convention under foreign missionaries until November 1954, when the last American missionaries departed, prompting national leaders to take charge.
From 1955, the MBC became more organized by appointing a full-time Executive Secretary and other officers, marking a transition to a self-sustaining organization. It was registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI of 1860 on June 21, 1955. Since then, the MBC has played a crucial role in facilitating spiritual growth, social development, and community service among its member churches. Today, it unites over 30 Baptist associations, continuing to promote cooperation and address contemporary challenges in the region.
Affliation & Partnership
The MBC is affiliated and co-operating with the Council of Baptist Churches in North-East India (CBCNEI), Asia Pacific Baptist Federation (APBF), Baptist World Alliance (BWA), and partnering with North East India Christian Council (NEICC), National Council of Churches in India (NCCI), National Council of Baptist Churches in India (NCBCI) and other likeminded organizations as per the decision of the Executive Council.

Today, the Church has grown into one of the largest Churches in the state. MBCCCI is a melting pot of all cultures where people from diverse backgrounds and languages fervently worship the living God in the Spirit and in truth.
Every Sunday, over 1,000 people gather for worship services at

Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month, and water baptism is conducted every two months. All are warmly welcomed to join our worship services and become part of our growing community.
